The holidays were over; and the time had arrived to get back into our daily routine. The alarm clock woke me up – a harsh ringing that I had not heard for two weeks! Groaning, I opened my eyes and stretched. How I wished we had an extra week!
I got up and did my morning exercise. Slowly as I warmed up, the sleepiness left my head. Then came the preparation of lunches, breakfast, waking up children, getting ready to leave the house. Walking to work, the fresh air shook away the last vestiges of sleepiness. I entered my classroom, getting things ready for the start of the day.
“Bonne année”, I heard from my colleagues. “Bonjour Madame,” I heard from the children I teach. “I missed you”, “The holidays were too long”, “I have new crayons”, “We saw snow this high!”. I smiled at the excited chatter as my young students caught up on their news, sharing the activities they had done over the last two weeks.
The day passed by quickly as we moved from one activity to the next. My alarm clock had helped me make the time adjustment to getting up early (and will help me in days to come as I get used to waking up early again!). However, it did not help me with the hunger pangs I felt an hour and a half before the end of the day. I had grown used to eating at odd hours during the day – going to the fridge whenever hunger struck. Now I had to get used to eating on schedule again. And to eating more at one sitting so that my tummy does not rumble!
I need to remember to eat like my grade ones: to nibble on a snack during recess! A banana, a couple of crackers, a chunk of cheese. I am hoping that soon my body will adjust to school eating times so that I no longer experience this empty feeling in my stomach.
What do you snack on when you feel hunger pangs during the day?

Snacks are really important- when I taught I’d have an apple or two during the day. Now I still snack- apples and nuts, sometimes a chunk of cheese or a yogurt.
Nuts are one of my favourite things to snack on. Unfortunately with the school board’s nut-free policy, I am unable to eat these at school.
He, he, he, education is not only for the kids, is it?
Definitely not! And the kids are in the same boat I think. They keep asking me today “Is it lunch time yet?” And we still have an hour to go
I snack on string cheese. Sometimes a banana.
BE ENCOURAGED! BE BLESSED!
I enjoy the bananas too – especially the sweet-tasting ones.
That’s rather late to be getting up, Colline.
I find a glass of water and a few almonds satisfies my hunger pangs.
I have taken to drinking tea. In addition it prevents me from feeling dehydrated
While having sympathy with you for going back to work, you are lucky to have employers who allow time off. Mine is a real stinker and allowed me little break at all during the holiday period. Being self-employed has its downside!
That it does! I may have the time to eat (cannot snack while I am teaching), but that does not mean I am not doing things that need to be done. With the energy teachers use during the day, I think there would be a riot if we were not able to eat
Hi,
It is always hard to get back into a routine after a good break.
I usually have fruit when I am a little bit hungry, we have wonderful fruit here being in the tropics, and it is always tasty and good for you as well.
I love fruit too. As I am writing to you, I am munching on an apple. Thank goodness for the import/export industry as it allows me to eat from my favourite food group
Ice cream!! No, no, I mean apples and grapes!
Especially Double Dutch Chocolate! No, I had better stick to the apples and grapes
It so tough get back into a routine. I wish you luck! And enjoy teaching–kids say the funniest things.
The one thing I love about my job is the children. By the end of the day I am tired – but I can never say I had a boring day!
Snacking at work is not encouraged, but, I do enjoy flatbread filled with egg and overstuffed with veggies drizzled with chipotle sauce and a coffee every day at 1100! If I must snack during the day, a handful of walnuts and a piece of fruit like a pear is a fav snack between meals.
Unsalted nuts and fruit – filling and juicy. A perfect snack for me when I am at home.
YOu know when I started reading your post, not in a million years did I think that it would end up about snacks, haha. Great post Colline. The kids are still on holidays here, they go back in about 2 weeks, I can’t wait.
Like to give little surprises now and again! The second week back to work and my tummy has adjusted. No longer feel the hunger pangs
