Each year at Christmas time, my children enjoy creating a gingerbread house. They use icing and candies to decorate it, calling to mind the witch’s house in the story of Hansel and Gretel.
When we break off a piece of this house to taste, however, we are not in danger of being captured and eaten by an evil witch! What we are in danger of, though, is being tempted to break off another piece to savour the taste of the gingerbread.
What I enjoy the most of our gingerbread house tradition is the joy my children experience as they work on their creation. And the scent of the gingerbread as it permeates our home.
Do you enjoy making gingerbread houses in your home?

Oh no! Not the best time to do this as gingerbread houses are rare this time of year 🙂

Although this is the time of year that a lot of stores have the gingerbread house kits on sale for 1/2 and 3/4 off regular price. I have a friend who had always wanted to build a gingerbread house but never had a chance as a kid. When he was 51, he came across one of the kits on sale shortly after Christmas and bought it. He decided he was going to fulfill a lifelong dream. He loved every minute of it and, except for the small sections I ate, he ate the whole thing.

Just goes to show it is never too late to try something. Gingerbread house building was not something I grew up with but it is a tradition I have enjoyed sharing with my children when we came to live in Canada.

The trick, I think, is holding the pieces together until they ‘stick’ 🙂

It really was. We did decide, though, that next year we will use smarties as opposed to hard candies as the hard candies are not eaten in our household.

There is just something very “homey” about gingerbread houses, isn’t there?
Also, I really like your header.

We love making Gingerbread houses at our house. I even used to bake them all from SCRATCH many years ago. OMG! Now we buy the kits and I am so much happier to just help decorate them than having to bake all the parts. I love putting a big, white paper table cloth on the table and just pouring oodles of candy onto it. At the end I can just roll it up and throw the mess away. Love the pic Colline!

You have now given me a tip for next year 🙂
I rely on the kits too. I have thought of baking it myself and have looked for recipes – but always seem to run out of time. We now know which brand we like the taste of and always buy that one.
